Plank Board: a roof decking/sheathing typically used on residential homes built prior to the 1960s. The boards can vary in size and thickness. Plank board roof sheathing is an acceptable roof deck for asphalt shingle installation as long as there are no significant spacing or gaps between each individual plank. We found *quite* a few gaps here!

❤️‍🩹Matt and Crissy said goodbye to one of our Stublen Roofing mascots, ̶M̶e̶a̶t̶b̶a̶l̶l̶ Brutus, on Monday. Never could we have imagined that this tiny, odd little ball-of-meat, worms, and extra toes delivered to us in an empty 6-Pack of Modelo could have made it 13 beautiful years. He leaves a chasm in our hearts, but we take solace knowing one day that empty space will be filled with only the best memories... Like the time he was in the rickety old Stublen Roofing van on the way to work with Matt and so got startled at the sound of the ladders rattling while taking a turn that he leaped into Matt’s lap, letting out a terrified little terd. Or how Paula would always wrap him up in a “babushka” when we were still working out of the home office. Or how, whenever P+B babysat and were winding down for the evening, at 9:30pm *on the dot*, he would get “the look of love” and try to mount Billy’s leg. Or how Crissy didn’t even want Matt to bring the puppy home because, “#sharpei (s) have a ton of health problems…” but then gladly became his main caretaker, and him her guardian. Memories like when they payed real American dollars to speak over the phone with a pet psychic, only to learn he “didn’t think his name was be fitting of a creature of such a stature, and that he would prefer to be known as ‘Brutus.’” 🔮 And recalling how gentle he was with any creature smaller than him, even mean little Angel and the carpenter bees in the backyard. So many people loved following along with his antics (and ever growing list of nicknames), we would be remiss if we didn’t share some of our favorites here… And, a bonus 2013 video from the first time he ever payed attention to the TV because he realized there WERE other dogs who looked like him (although some of our friends’ children might never believe it) 💕🐾 “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” A. As seen in our last post - [TRANSCRIPT: Roof Jack: a piece of equipment installed on a sloped roof to provide a stable platform for workers during repairs or installation. Typically nailed or screwed into the roof decking and paired with a sturdy wooden plank to create a temporary platform. They are easily adjustable & removable after the job is completed.� Ladder Jack: a triangular or scaffold-like bracket that attaches to two extension ladders to support a work platform, such as a wooden or aluminum plank (aka. walkboard). Designed to create a safe, elevated workspace. They are adjustable & lightweight, making them easy to set up & reposition. Walkboard: a sturdy plank or platform used to provide a stable walking surface during construction or repair work at heights. Walkboards can be made of wood, aluminum, or composite materials & are often placed on roof jacks, or ladder jacks. ]

This repair involved a little bit of everything - roofing, siding, fascia, gutters, and drip edge. Over time, the wood lap siding had developed significant rot due to improper drainage from the gutter system located above 😩 The fascia board behind the gutter had also deteriorated 😒 In order to fix this, we had to remove the drip edge and slate roofing above the fascia board and gutter to make the necessary repairs. Then, we installed new copper drip edge over the new fascia, and new slate tiles over the copper drip edge. Finally, we reinstalled the gutter. Good thing we had our ladder jacks, roof jacks, and walkboards to perform this repair safely!

This was a difficult repair for Curtis and Carlos with the 40' ladder and Kristen not only had to coordinate with the Teresa, but schedule access to the airspace in order fly the drone near Oceana by requesting to unlock that restricted area. We are always thankful we can count on our team to provide exceptional service for the community, but something about positive feedback from friends hits different 🫶🏼 . . . . Redirecting water from one area of the roof to another can be a challenge. To help divert water from areas where pooling may occur, such as the high side of chimneys and certain roof transitions, we install crickets as part of the chimney flashing system. No one *really* knows where the roofing term "Cricket" came from! . Some linguists trace the name back to 3-legged bar stools of the 1700s called "Cricket Tables," which used a triangle structure between the legs to steady them on wobbly surfaces (or underneath wobbly guests). But the mere presence of a triangle is the only similarity, so this seems like a stretch... . Etymologists then point to a "Crackett;" a shorter 3-legged stool that has a sloped seat used by coal miners. The "slope" of the seat gets a us a little closer to the roof crickets we know today, but we still don't buy it. . Others (somehow) trace the word origin back to the French word *besace*, which typically refers to a wallet or saddlebag. This explains the peaked structure being referred to as "Chimney Saddle," but has nothing to do with the word (or bug) we know as "cricket"... . Legends as far back as ancient China claim that crickets brought wealth and wellness to anyone in their presence. Crickets have often been cast in gold and set above a fireplace hearth for good luck. These small bugs were the origin for Charles Dickens' book, "A Cricket on the Hearth..." So now we have the [Hearth > Fireplace > Chimney > Chimney Cricket] connection, but still doesn't quite explain the etymology of the word... . For this Suffolk home, we used Trivent Hidden Vent which looks like a solid panel, but has (you guessed it) *hidden vents* that allow 50% more airflow than traditional soffit vents, reducing utility bills and preventing mold and mildew damage in the attic space.

When it comes to roof repairs, our technicians are some of the best in the business. Our current policy for roof repair diagnostics is to get as much information from our customer as possible (including pictures, location of issues, age of the roof) before sending out a licensed, insured, skilled service technician to inspect, diagnose, and attempt to repair the roof in one visit. For this, we charge a minimum of $500, which is then applied to the final invoice for the work that was performed. We believe our experienced technicians who are willing and able to climb onto a roof, into an attic, troubleshoot, explain, document, and repair roofing problems, are well worth it. . . . Not all roof designs are ideal for water runoff and drainage. Low-sloped areas combined with intersecting roof valleys can lead to areas that are more prone to failure, which leads to a leaky roof 😭 Here, we color-matched the granules of the new #Certainteed Max-Def #LandmarkPro #BurntSienna shingles to a "peel-and-stick" modified bitumen roofing membrane. This roofing material is crafted by blending asphalt with polymerized rubber or plastic, reinforced with fiberglass and/or polyester fabric mats, resulting in a resilient yet pliable waterproof membrane. This self-adhering material is designed for low-sloped applications, and was the perfect material choice for this less than ideal roof design, and still looks beautiful from the ground.

Gambrel Roofs are pretty, but not when the shingles are nailed improperly. The detached, falling shingles on this mansard/gambrel roof slope were improperly nailed or "high nailed." This failure occurs when the roofing fasteners are installed above the shingle manufacturers' designated nailing area. It's imperative that the roofing fasteners are installed directly on the nail line through the common bond area on a two-piece laminated shingle or the shingle will delaminate and become detached from the roofing surface.

The gambrel roof, also called a barn roof, is a versatile, is a cost-effective style that adds storage space to your home. Here in the 757, we often call a gambrel roof a "mansard roof," which is, by definition, a different architectural style of roof, although both offer the possibility of an extra floor of living space or storage. A Gambrel Roof has Gables on each end. . . . This gorgeous #DaVinci #syntheticslate with upgraded #copperflashing #reroof project we recently completed out in Suffolk is not only a “Hip Roof,” but also a “Widows Walk.” A widow’s walk, (aka. widow’s watch) is a railed flat platform located at the peak of the roof found on coastal 19th-century North American homes. The name is said to come from the wives of mariners who would longingly search the horizon in hopes of their spouses’ return, often in vain as the ocean had taken the lives of their beloved, leaving the women without a partner. It can also be called a “Captains Walk,” or “roof walk” (boring) but those names aren’t nearly as interesting, (and don’t quite fit as well with the vibe of the song.)

Another common roof design is the HIP ROOF! This is where all four sides of a roof slope downward and all the exterior walls of the building are the same height as each other. This leaves the structure with less attic space, but are very reliable/durable since the roof is braced against itself. Because of this, Hip roofs offer better resistance to damage from high winds. On the flip side, they often have less of a pitch (or slope) than Gable Roofs, which is not ideal for snow or ice. . . . [TRANSCRIPT - Hip: 1) The area on either side of the pelvis that connects the thigh bone (femur) to the hip bone (pelvis) with a ball-and-socket joint. 2) Trendy or cool, up on the latest thing.
